How Hungarian students answered the questionnaire

We had 37 students answering the questionnaire: 25 girls and 12 boys aged between 13 and 16. More than 50 % of them were 15 years old, while there was only one  13- year-old.

We asked students to complete the form in English so there were some misunderstandings  and lack of vocabulary but we corrected the mistakes and changed the words into English.

The results:

There are 2 pessimistic students, a boy and a girl. They are both 16 and as far as I know them, they are good students. The other 35 students are optimistic. It is an amazing result because Hungarian people are said to be rather pessimistic ( eg.: national anthem).

7 students hate doing the washing up, and 12 students dislike doing the housework. I think their help is needed at home and they don’t like taking part and sharing the housework. Doing these activities as a teenager  it is a constraint and housework is rather a burden. Though I believe they don’t have to work so much that they feel overloaded with housework. For 5 students running and doing sport is a hateful activity, they might have had a bad experience in sports in the last few weeks. Only for 4 students learning is a hated activity.(!!!!) One student doesn’t like waking up early, one doesn’t like meeting unsociable people and one doesn’t like quarrelling. So the most painful activity for them is housework.

The most enjoyable activity is listening to music, 7 students vote for it as number one. Listening to music can be done anywhere, in their bedrooms or while waiting for the bus or walking in the street. We often see students having headphones on and wandering in the street. For 5 students watching TV is the most joyful activity and the same number of students like using the computer and playing computer games. It is surprising for me because I predicted more students who like computing. Some girls like walking and those who like animes love drawing. They have the same interests : animes. They usually share each other’s drawings, books and booklets. All the boys love sports and playing football, a girl likes playing volleyball. 3 students play a musical instrument: piano or guitar.

When talking about ambitions, the dreams are more or less the same.  For most of the students career is the first, a well paid job is a must and then family. There was a boy who would like to go to England  to get a reasonably paid job. Some of them depicted the job they would like to do: doctor, policeman, guide, designer, vet, chemist and psychologist. Two girls would like to be a clergyman/woman. It is very rare. 4 students wish to travel longer distances like to Australia or around the world.

Analising the question about  passions 10 students wrote computing/computer games and the Internet. Being a teenager they start going out and they like having parties(5students) . Only 3 students do sports passionately. Relaxation is important for  students. Sometimes (in the lessons) when they are asked about their weekend programmes they reply that they relax and do nothing. 3 students can afford travelling more than usual which is their passion. Unfortunately  only 2 students mentions reading as their passionate activity. Computing and watching TV took the lead.

Main qualities are a mixture of words. Mixing inner features with physical appearance. 2 students wrote tall and thin for physical appearance. 12 students think they are friendly. Being sociable and reliable is 4 students’ virtue. As main qualities they mention honesty, being nice, helpfulness, persistence, cleverness, politeness, patience, forgiveness and conscientiousness.

Main defect: this list is much more colourful than the main qualities part. 6 students feel that they are lazy and consider this for their main defect while others  are shy, forgetful and stubborn. Someone doesn’t like his voice, ad there is somebody who has admitted that he is a liar. Other students are loud, outspoken, quick tempered, bad tempered or impatient.

When choosing a hero for themselves they think of Superman(4), Hungarian historical people(4), a friend(2), Brad Pitt(2), mother(1!), Vanessa Hudgens(2) one of the stars of High School Musical, singers(Enrique Iglesias), actors/actresses(Hancock and Shreck as well), Spiderman.  Surprising to see  is that among the stars and the celebs there is a writer : A. E. Poe and a philosopher/writer: Dante.(Divine Comedy as favourite reading???). They think of people with superhuman features because they would like to own these features: being able to fly, climb and having magical power. When they think of friends they  mention their best friends with better and nicer qualities than themselves. When thinking of a parent the student admires and respects the mother (as background information: the parents are divorced).  When they think of stars, popular people,  maybe their opinion is influenced by the last film they saw or a good song that they heard recently. I don’t think these heroes stay heroes later on.

The most beloved words are in connection with love. 4 students wrote LOVE while the others chose words with positive connotation like EMOTIONS, HAPPY, SLEEP(what you enjoy), GOAL(footballer), BEACH, MUSIC (party girls), BUTTERFLY(nice animal), FASHION, CHOCOLATE, SKATEBOARD(for skaters), ANIME(for drawers). I think EXAMINATION, LEARNING, UMBRELLA and APPLE were written because of the spelling. They probably like the spelling of umbrella or like the song by Rihanna.

The most hated words are in connection with being upset/down: SAD(5), STRESS, HATE, EMBARRASSING or about their daily routine: GETTING UP, WORK, CLOCK, HOMEWORK, about bad weather: RAIN, about annoying appearance/feature: FRECKLES, MEAN, SWEAR. There are words that show that the spelling is difficult that’s why students don’t like them: PSYCHOLOGIST, PSYCHOLOGICAL, ENTHUSIASTIC, QUALIFICATION, ENCOURAGE, ENVIOUS.

Difficulties at home: as above we learnt that students don’t like doing housework. That means they often fight about housework and helping at home/around the house. Mainly tidying and cleaning are the worst areas/difficulties( 10 students). Students are picked on at home about school and learning. 5 students complain about their sisters or brothers, upsetting them, annoying them.

Difficulties at school: learning is the key problem. Forgetting homework, preparing for school , writing tests and learning  cause problems and difficulties for 21 students. 6 students are annoyed with their classmates, some of them can’t bear the groups in classes.

It was interesting to see how our students tell a few things about themselves. I really liked the way how Yvette and Natalie designed the questionnaire. We have asked 37 students of whom 17 take part in the exchange.  It was great to get to know that there are no more problems at school than learning and homework. At least these 37 say that. Although they represent only almost the  20% of the school but the age range is determining the most. I believe their answers are suitable to analyse. They are absolutely different from each other which makes it even more exciting to work with them(and on them).
